Introduction to Portfolios
Portfolios are being used more and more in both academic institutions and in the work world. In schools they are seen as a beneficial method of measuring the learning achieved by a student, as well as that student’s organization and presentation skills. In the work world, they are presented by individuals seeking employment. It has been realized that the portfolio can represent a potential employee’s accomplishments and skills far better than a simple resume can.
In the ECE Program, we are utilizing the portfolio for two purposes. The first is as a tool for evaluation; it will be submitted and marked for content in Field Placement Preparation and in Field Placements I, II and III. The second use is as a means of marketing the student’s skills and accomplishments to potential employers.

The Home Page
The home page is the initial glimpse or first impression an employer will have of your work, make it professional and attractive. Choose your content wisely. Explain the purpose of your portfolio and any navigation tips or key information that you want to provide from the beginning. Here you are introducing yourself and your portfolio.
Employment
If you are using an E-Portfolio to market yourself to an employer you may want to add professional images of yourself with children in the field placement (work) environment. You may also elect to include additional professional artifacts that you have created during your educational or professional experiences. It is also beneficial to include a volunteer and community involvement page; a professional development page; and a references page. You will modify your professional portfolio from that of your program portfolio.

Tips
- Plan ahead and explore how to use the website and template that best suits you. The sites suggested above are very intuitive, but require practice.
- Save documents as a pdf prior to uploading as it will maintain the format.
- Include buttons for easy navigation throughout pages.
- If you want to hide pages: Go to Pages, Advance Settings, Check box Hide this page from navigation and save. Do this for all of your pages.
- Proof read for spelling and grammar errors.
- Check all links to ensure that they are operational.
- Always save your work! Also, I would recommend that any content that you add to a site you also save in a word document and always back-up your files.
- If you are including social media sites please be aware they are public and should consist of professionally appropriate content.
- Remember this is a living document and should be updated continually and evolve as you develop your experience and practice.
- You should review the College of Early Childhood Educators (CECE) requirements for professional development and align your professional portfolio to the headings used by the CECE, if you want your portfolio to represent your work in the field of ECE and not only as a graduate of the program.

This is a form that you can set up for an employer to contact you by email. You will still want to provide your contact details separately for employers. That is why there is a Contact page. |
